US sanctions Zimbabwe president Mnangagwa over Human Rights violation

The white house has imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe’s president Emmerson Mnangagwa for alleged abuse of power.

President Mnangagwa has been accused of  human rights abuse and corruption.  The punitive action by the US means Zimbabwe’s president together with other senior officials will not have access to the US on unofficial business.

“We continue to witness gross abuses of political, economic and human rights. The targeting of civil society and severe restrictions on political activity have stifled fundamental freedoms, while key actors, including the government leaders, have siphoned off public resources for personal gains,” the white house stated.

According to the White House the illegal activities carried out by official leaders are contributing to the global criminal network of corrupt activities that impoverish most communities in Zimbabwe and other parts of the world.

However, president Mnangagwa's spokesman, Farai Muroiwa expressed his discontent on X (twitter) referring to president Mnangagwa’s foreign policy of being open to all nations as bitter sweet.

“If the president, the first lady and senior officials remain sanctioned then Zimbabwe remains sanctioned and burdened by this illegality,” the X statement read

Other senior leaders sanctioned together with the president Mnangagwa include the first lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, Vice president Constantino Chiwenga and defence minister Oppah Muchungiri.
