UK passport prices to rise for the second time in a period of 14 months

The price of UK passport application is yet to rise again on Thursday April 11, 2024 for the second time in a period of 14 months.

According to reports by The Home Office, to get a new or renewed passport online for adults will be  £88.50 from the current £82.50 while applying for the child’s passport online will go up from 53.50 Euros to 57.50 Euros.

The home office explained the rise saying that there were no profits in passport applications and they intend to improve services through the increase in application prices.

“The new fees will help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation. The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications,” the Home Office said

However, Martyn James, a consumer rights campaigner criticized the move saying that an organization should not rise its service prices just because it has the ability to without putting the consumers into consideration.

“Just because a business a business or organization can raise prices doesn’t mean they should…………………….yet the passport office has struggled over the same period with meeting its basic obligations, so many users will question what they are getting for their money,” Martin James stated

UK passport will now be the most expensive in Europe with the current 7% rise that follows a 9% rise that was witnessed in February 2023.
