Tourists Forced to Evacuate the Maasai Mara National Reserve Camps due to Floods

The Talek River running through Maasai Mara broke its banks on Wednesday forcing the tourists and the staff individuals in the camps inside Maasai Mara to be evacuated to nearby Hotels for safety.

Reports say that forty guests and several staff members have been rescued after the river overflowed to their camps.

Speaking at Sarova Mara Lodge, Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu confirmed that the rescue operation did not report any casualties. Governor Ntutu said that the river had overflown at midnight leaving guests trapped in several camps that were close to the river.

The affected camps include Floods Tipilikwani camp, Mara Leisure camp, Mara Base camp, Olkinyei camp, Mara Big Five, Mariot Camp, Sweet Acacia, Pride Inn Mara and Kananga camp.

Earlier on the Cabinet Secretary for tourism and wildlife Alfred Mutua urged hotels adjacent to rivers to put in place evacuation measures for their visitors in case of flooding.
