The Senate proposes new bill on IEBC officials over delaying of election results

IEBC officials to face a five year jail term if election results are delayed without proper justification.

The Kenyan senate has proposed a new bill  on Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission(IEBC) officials, to face a five years jail term for delaying election results if a valid reason is not given.

This will be an amendment to section 6 of the election offences act, 2016, which only states that election official failing to announce the results in time as an offence but doesn’t state the consequences.

However, upon approval, the amended section will state the penalty for the offence.

“a member of the commission, staff or other person having any duty to perform pursuant to any written law relating to any election who were required under the elections act or nay other law to declare the result of an election commits an offence and is liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding two million shillings or to improvement for term not exceeding five years or to both,” the new Bill states.

Both the Kenya kwanza and Azimio members supported the bill unanimously increasing its chances of approval.
