The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chairperson Lyn Mengich has disregarded the legislative proposal aimed at reducing the statutory retirement age to 55.
Speaking on Tuesday, Lyn argued that lowering the retirement age will lead to taxpayers carrying a higher pension liability as a result more people will be on pension.
“The conversation should be what works for Kenya. If you say people retire at 55 it means they are pensionable at 55 yet they are people who are still productive, they can contribute effectively to the country,” Lyn said.
The SRC chairperson explained that it would be impractical to dispose of employees at a fairly young age while they still have experience in the workforce.
The current mandatory retirement age for public servants is 60 years and 65 for those with disabilities. In the aim to give young people more opportunities to grow professionally in the workforce, a proposal was issued to the parliament to lower the retirement age to 55.
