Red Cross Reports 11,206 Households Displaced by floods since March 2024

The Kenya Red cross in a statement on Tuesday reported that the ongoing heavy rains countrywide have affected at least 24741 households with 11,206 among them being displaced.

According to the data released by the Red Cross, more than 27,716 acres of land have been submerged since the beginning of March rains.

"Since the onset of the March-April-May (MAM) rains, multiple counties have felt its effects, resulting in households being affected, displacements, establishment of displacement camps, submerged arable land, impacted businesses and livestock deaths,” the report said

The Red Cross further confirmed that measures have already been put in place to respond to the emergencies. According to them at least 188 people have been rescued and IDP camps set up by April 22nd to shelter the displaced individuals.

“The Kenya Red Cross Society has proactively prepared for these challenges by ensuring prompt emergency responses, conducting search and rescue missions, prepositioning shelter kits and distributing essential supplies," Red Cross said

So far the heavy rains have affected at least 23 counties in the country.
