Raila enshrines an Elders council to act on his behalf when he leaves the ODM party

ODM party leader Raila Odinga has established an elder’s council that will be in charge of major decision on his behalf when he leaves for the AU commission chairperson job.

Raila's decision is aimed at giving the organ a constitutional mandate to manage the party in his absence, should he be elected the African Union Commission chairperson next February.

The Elders Council received approval from the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) last Thursday and will be incorporated into the ODM constitution in the coming later. However the members of the council are yet to be revealed.

In addition, a Board of Trustees was also set aside to work closely with the Elders Council to strengthen the governance structure of ODM as a strategy to protect the party from rogue elements.

Raila’s probable exit from the ODM party for the AU job seemed to create a caucus between various ODM leaders among them being Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparanya.

The membership of the council is expected to be set up in the next few days.
