Public Health Workers unions have issued a 7 day strike notice

Unions relating to public health workers in the country have issued a seven days strike notice to the government beginning from April 16, 2024.

Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi on Tuesday, the Secretary General of Kenya environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union (KEHPHPU), Brown Achira affirmed that the strike will include all the public health associated unions even those that are currently at work.

The unions are demanding a fair treatment and payment of all members inclusive of interns and immediate recognition and absorption of their members. The unions have further asserted that their current demands are non-monetary.

“We want the government to sign the recognition agreement and it is non-monetary,” the KEHPDU SG said

Michael Odero who is the secretary general for Kenya National Union of Nutritionists and Dieticians (KUNAD) has disregarded the government claims of not having enough resources, pointing out the projects that it’s carrying out at the moment.

“The government has blacklisted the ongoing doctor’s strike saying there is no money while housing projects are being put up in the country,” Odero said

The unions comprise of Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union (KEHPHPU), The Kenya National Union of Pharmaceutical Technologist Officers (KNUPT) and The Kenya National Union of Nutritionists and Dietitians (KUNAD) who have all agreed on fully supporting the ongoing KMPDU strike.

This comes shortly after the interior CS Kithure kindiki issued a warning to the striking doctors saying the strike was illegal.
