President William Ruto hosts Somalia's Hassan Sheikh Mohamud


Somalia's president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Nairobi on Wednesday, for the sixth session of the UN environment Assembly (UNEA6). He was officially received at the state house by President William Ruto.

Coincidentally, the Somalia president arrives in Kenya as the Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed ends his state visit. During his meeting with Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, president Ruto shared his stance in the ongoing Somalia and Ethiopia territorial disputes the ongoing confrontations between Ethiopia and Somali over breakaway territory, where Somalia accuses Ethiopia of trying to seize their territory. However the Ethiopian prime minister publicly denied the allegations.

 With President Hassan Mohamud’s visit in Kenya, he is expected to address this challenges affecting peace and sustainable development in the region.

Disagreements between Ethiopia and Somalia leaves president Ruto responsible in ensuring equality, for kenya to sustain its relationships with the two countries. As for Somalia, Kenya played a role in the persuasion and influencing approval of the country to join as the seventh member of the east African community (EAC).

 In the case of Ethiopia, PM Abiy’s state visit in Kenya lead to enhancement of a bilateral cooperation in economic, and social developments.

In September 2022, a similar meet up happened where President William Ruto met with Somalia’s sheikh Mohamud to engage in talks over boosting bilateral ties and enhance security between the Kenya and Somalia.
