New amendments made to the affordable housing program for Kenyans

The government has revealed the new strategy that will be used in purchasing of the houses under the affordable housing program.

The housing principal secretary, Charles Hinga said that the government is going to grant the houses on a first come first serve basis prioritizing those who applied earlier in the ‘Boma yangu’ portal.

“What I didn’t update you on the Mr. President is that part of this law making is public participation which is not an exercise of ticking the box. One of the things my committee went through was the issue of deposit. Many Kenyans stated that they liked the program but didn’t prefer the deposit. So both houses agreed with them and there is no more deposit. Now the government issues based on first come first serve, hence you’re required to apply, spend Ksh 200 and chose where you want to live,” the PS stated

Previously Kenyans were required to pay ten per cent of the unit value to secure a house. Additionally, the program is set to also prioritize youth, women and people with disabilities.

To activate the account a fee of Ksh 200 is required.
