Malaysia rejects offer to hold the 2026 Common Wealth games

The government of Malaysia has rejected the offer to hold the 2026 common wealth games over insufficient funding.

Speaking on Friday during a briefing, the government spokesman and communications minister, Fahmi Fadzil said that the funding offered was not enough and Malaysia will not commit to hosting the event with the little time they have till the event.

“If we had a longer time, we would definitely do it but because there is such a short time, we definitely can’t do it. When we assessed the viability of hosting the games, the length of time needed and the cost was seen to be particularly prohibitive.”

Initially, the Australian state of Victoria was to host the games but they withdrew later which led to Malaysia being asked to step in with the Commonwealth Games Federation(CFG) offering 100m euros for financial support in preparation of the event.

However the CGF are yet to respond to Malaysia declining the offer

The common wealth games involve 70 countries and territories of the British Empire.
