Kenya suspends its police deployment mission to Haiti

Kenya police deployment temporarily paused over pending installation of a new interim government in Haiti

The Kenyan government has temporarily suspended its deployment of 1000 police officers to Haiti as part of the multinational security support mission supported by the UN.

According to a report by the principal secretary for foreign affairs, korir Sing’oei, the Haitian political administration lacks an anchor on which the deployment can rest. Therefore he explained that the government will wait until a constitutionally abiding system is established.

“There has been a fundamental change in circumstances as a result of the complete breakdown of law and order and the subsequent resignation of the PM Ariel Henry. Without a proper political administration in Haiti, there is no anchor on which a police deployment can rest. Whence government will await the installation of a new constitutional authority in Haiti, before taking further decisions on the matter,” PS Korir stated.

The United States spokesperson, Matthew Miller reacted to the news, saying it was natural for Kenya to check on the stability of the government which will welcome them. Additionally he said that the decision could push the installation to happen sooner.

“The new transitional council which will appoint an interim prime minister should be formed in the next 24 to 48 hours and this will pave way for the continuation of the mission,” Miller stated

Kenya’s initiative to send police officers to lead the security mission has been entangled in legal challenges for a while now.
