Kenya Meteorological department issues warning of 24hrs long heavy rains

The Kenya Meteorological department has issued a warning to Kenyans to prepare for heavy rainfall that will begin on Saturday and end on April 18, 2024 at 6pm.

The forecast said heavy rainfall of more than 40mm in 24hrs will be experienced over Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including the Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands and South coast on April 14, 2024. 

"The heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds, large ocean waves and strong southerly winds in the Southeastern region," Director, Meteorological services David Gikungu said.

According to Kenya Met, the rainfall is likely to intensify from April 15 to 18, 2024 to more than 50mm in 24hrs along the Coast.

The meteorological services director also advised residents to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

Recently various parts of the country have experienced floodings from heavy rains, causing displacement.
