The United States is urging Prime Minister Ariel Henry to step aside as the interim president and give space for establishment of a new government system.
The US ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield, said that the US suggested to the prime minister to resign and establish a council that will transition the presidency.
“The Haitian prime minister should move forward on the political process that will lead to the establishment of a presidential transitional council that will lead to elections,” Linda stated
With the escalating chaos in Haiti, Kenya has delayed the deployment of its police officers as agreed. The US cautioned that if the deployment does not happen urgently, the Haiti National Police could fall.
However, the US has also made it clear that they are not pushing him to resign, but it’s an urge to expedite the transition to an empowered and inclusive governing structure that will help the country with the multinational security to address the current situation.
Since the Assassination of the Haitian president Jovenel Moise in July 2021, prime minister Ariel Henry has remained the top government official and has never shown plans of stepping down.
