Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has issued a statement rescheduling school reopening dates from April 29, 2024 to May 6 2024.
Speaking on Monday morning, Education CS Machogu said received reports on the effects of the ongoing heavy rains on schools show that a good number are in severe conditions and sending learners and staff back will a risk of their lives.
"The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities. Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, to Monday, May 6, 2024," Machogu stated.
This comes after the National Parents Association proposed changes in opening dates for schools in affected areas on Sunday.
According to reports various schools across the country have been affected by floods while others are being used to host affected individuals who have been displaced from their homes by the floods.
