Baltimore Bridge collapses after being hit by a cargo ship

A bridge has collapsed in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, in US after it was hit by a cargo ship, sending several vehicles into the water.

According to reports, the container ship referred to as Dali was headed to Colombo in Sri Lanka when it collided with the bridge.

At least seven people are believed to have fallen into the water, however, the Baltimore city director of communications in the fire department said that it is too early to tell how many people have been affected saying the collapse is a “developing mass casualty event”.

“Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people,” Kevin Cartwright said.

From the video footages shared, a large section of the 1.6 mile long Francis Scott Key Bridge is seen falling into the water following the collision.

The bridge locally known as the Key Bridge was built in 1977. It is one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world.
