76 Missing In Mai Mahiu Dam Tragedy: Kenya Red Cross Reports

Kenya Red Cross recent reports on the Mai Mahiu dam tragedy show that 76 people have been reported missing, 110 rescued and a total of 250 are being hosted at Ngeya girl’s secondary school.

Speaking in a radio interview, deputy president Rigathi Gachagua said that the government has confirmed 71 deaths already as the search and rescues enters day two.

“We have 46 people in the mortuary but we have more bodies being taken there so they will be about 71. There are many others who are still missing and a search is ongoing. We pray that we find them alive. If they are dead then we will say God is never questioned,” Gachagua said

The search mission was expanded to neighboring villages and the death toll is expected to rise. 45 bodies among them 17 minors had already been recovered around the scene a few hours after the tragedy.

The Mai Mahiu dam burst its banks on Monday morning carrion everything on its way. The dam in Old Kijabe is located 20km away from the village but it was able to extend to the neighboring countries killing tens of people and others are yet to be found.
